Peace in Our Time? Celebrating Korea’s Progress
“By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things.” Galatians 5:22-23
God’s Spirit is truly at work in our world, even in those places where we sometimes give up hope, despair of progress, and doubt lasting change. But the fruit of God’s Spirit is not solely dependent on our ability to keep faith. Often, we can simply sit back and marvel that miraculous things are happening, which then can inspire us to renewed belief. I am so inspired by what is continuing to happen between North and South Korea.
On the second day of a three-day summit between Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong Un, the leaders of the two Koreas made bold declarations that Pyongyang was on its way to denuclearization. It is easy to dismiss this as simple diplomacy, but many Koreans doubted that such a day and such declarations could never happen. Even statements of intention to move toward peace, restoration, and reunification are nothing short of miraculous in the minds of a great number of people. It is of great significance that this is the third summit between Korean leadership. This lays a critical foundation for U.S. involvement and the relationship that President Trump builds and maintains with North Korea.
Beyond military de-escalation, talks included a commitment “to search for the remains of troops killed but unaccounted for during the Korean War and pull back their guard posts within the DMZ on a trial basis," (according to one government official). Talk has occurred to transform the DMZ into a “peace zone.”
“After having lived together for 5000 years, our Korean nation had been separated for 70 years. Today at this place I propose to completely end 70 years of animosity and take a big step toward to once again become one and unify” President Moon Jae-In, speech in front of 150,000 citizens of North Koreans. I encourage us all to celebrate BIG STEPS wherever and whenever they occur. What is now happening in Korea is not just about Korea: it affects global community and diplomacy, and it involves a healthy and supportive relationship with the United States and other world powers.
It is too simple to view all of this as political, social, military, and economic without comprehending the spiritual dimensions as well. This is a healing of a nation, of families, of communities, of race and ethnicity, of a people. Korea has been divided in many physical, emotional, ethical, and metaphysical ways for seven decades. While a reconciliation of religion may not be in the offing, a reconciliation grounded in “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control,” seems possible for the first time in years.
I want to call upon all Christians and people of goodwill to engage in a witness of prayer for global peace, exemplified by what is happening on the Korean peninsula. For Korea, I ask that we pray for peace, but also for a creative and generative vision for a unified and vital future. By God’s grace, may families, friends, traditions and heritages be reconciled and healed. At this point, a great deal of power is in President Trump’s hand as the United States continues to negotiate with the Korea’s – to provide a way forward as these leaders meet at the UN assembly next week and beyond. I pray that this movement takes us through an Armistice Treaty to a true, lasting peace treaty in the very near future.. This is a holy time, and a time to rejoice and be glad. For our God is an awesome and miraculous God who can move us beyond our most devastating differences to a new and glorious unity and promise.

우리가 때로는 희망을 잃고, 진보가 절망하고, 지속적인 변화가 의심되는 곳에서조차 하나님의 성령은 우리 가운데 실제로 역사하고 계십니다. 그러나 하나님의 성령의 열매는 단지 우리의 믿음을 지키는 능력에만 의존하지 않습니다. 종종 우리는, 우리의 믿음이 새로워지도록 감동을 주는 놀라운 일이 벌어지는 현실 앞에 단순히 앉아서 경탄할 수밖에 없습니다. 나는 남과 북 사이에 계속해서 일어나는 일로 인하여 큰 감명을 받았습니다.
3 일간의 정상 회담의 이틀째 되는 날, 남북한의 두 정상인 문재인 대통령과 김정은 위원장은 평양이 비핵화를 향한 길을 가고 있다는 담대한 선언을 했습니다. 이를 단순한 외교적 수사로 일축하기는 쉽지만, 많은 한국인들은 그러한 날과 그러한 선언이 결코 일어날지 않을거라고 생각해왔습니다. 평화, 회복 및 통일을 지향한다고 한 성명서는 많은 사람들의 마음 속에 거의 기적으로 여겨집니다. 이것이 남북한 정상 간의 세 번째 정상 회담의 큰 의미입니다. 이것은 미국의 참여와 트럼프 대통령이 북한과의 관계를 세우고 유지하는데 중요한 밑거름이 될 것입니다.
군축 외에도, 한 정부 관리에 따르면, 회담에서 “한국 전쟁 중 사망한 전사자 유해를 발굴하고, 비무장 지대 내 경비초소를 시험적으로 철수하기”로 약속했고, 또 비무장지대를 “평화 지대"로 바꾸기로 했습니다.

지금 한국에서 일어나고 있는 것은 단지 한국만의 것이 아닙니다. 세계 공동체와 외교에 영향을 미치며, 미국과 세계의 다른 세력과의 건전하고 우호적인 관계와 밀접하게 연결되어 있습니다.
이 모든 것을 정치적, 사회적, 군사적, 경제적으로만 여기는 것은 영적 차원에 대한 이해가 결여된 너무 순진한 것입니다. 이것은 국가와 가족과 지역 사회와 인종 및 민족 그리고 사람을 치유하는 것입니다.
한국은 지난 70년 동안 육체적, 정서적, 윤리적, 형이상학적 등 수많은 분열로 점철되어 왔습니다. 종교의 화해가 가까운 장래에 일어나지 않을 수도 있지만 "사랑, 기쁨, 평화, 인내, 친절, 관용, 충실, 온유와 자기 통제"에 기반한 화해는 수년 만에 처음으로 가능할 것으로 보입니다.
나는 모든 그리스도인과 선한 뜻을 가진 사람들에게 한반도에서 일어나고 있는 일들을 통해 볼 수 있는 세계 평화를 위한 기도에 참여할 것을 요청합니다. 한국을 위해서, 나는 여러분이 평화를 위해 기도할 것을 요청할 뿐만 아니라, 아울러 통합되고 활기찬 미래를 위한 창조적이고 생산적인 비전을 위해 기도할 것을 요청합니다. 하나님의 은혜로 가족과, 친구, 전통과 유산이 치유받고, 화목하게 될 것입니다.
지금 현재, 다음 주와 그 이후에 유엔 총회에서 이 지도자들끼리 만날 방법을 마련하기 위해 미국이 남북한과 협상을 지속하고 있고, 이 모든 것이 트럼프 대통령의 손에 달려 있습니다.
저는 이 움직임이 아주 가까운 장래에 휴전협정을 지나 진실되고 영구적인 평화협정으로 이끌기를 기도합니다. 지금은 거룩한 때이고, 기뻐하며, 즐거워할 시간입니다. 우리 하나님은 우리의 가장 파괴적인 차이를 새롭고 영광스러운 통일과 언약으로 인도하시는, 놀라운 그리고 기적을 행하시는 하나님이십니다.
