Texas bishops respond to border crisis

DALLAS — Thirteen active and retired United Methodist bishops with close ties to Texas have signed a letter calling for non-partisan solutions to the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. They are asking for an end to policies that separate families, as well as “compassionate care for the health and welfare of children.” They also are appealing for improved treatment of asylum seekers and refugees.

Letter: Asbury should repent of harm done LGBTQ people

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A letter from a group of alumni and students of Asbury Theological Seminary urges fellow administrative leaders, faculty and alumni to repent of harm done to LGBTQ people in The United Methodist Church. The letter said support of the passage of the Traditional Plan at the 2019 General Conference has harmed LGBTQ people.

Texas Conference
Warm welcome yields growth for church

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — A&M United Methodist Church has restored its organ, improved its contemporary worship space and focused on offering a warm welcome, including to Texas A&M University students. The church, led by the Rev. Preston Greenwaldt, even has an “Adopt an Aggie” program. Since January, A&M United Methodist has added 101 members. Lindsay Peyton reports.

South Georgia Conference
In praise of small steps

MACON, Ga. — As the world marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, South Georgia Bishop R. Lawson Bryan reflects on how small steps can become giant leaps. “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” astronaut Neil Armstrong said as he set foot on the lunar surface. Armstrong’s words remind us of the extreme importance of small steps, Bryan writes.
