Burundi student to be counselor

Desire Niyonkuru has traveled more than 7,500 miles to study pastoral counseling at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. Niyonkuru’s parents were killed in class violence in Burundi, Africa. His tuition and living expenses are covered by scholarships, grants and the seminary’s work-study program.

Art ministry helps those in recovery

An art show at the Art Center of Battle Creek features works by students from the Men’s Life Recovery Program at The Haven of Rest Ministries and the Rev. Sue Trowbridge, a retired United Methodist pastor. The paintings by Trowbridge and her students are on sale, and profits will benefit The Haven of Rest Ministries.

A Christian response to antisemitism

Bishop Julius C. Trimble writes that as a Christian leader, he bears a profound obligation to oppose antisemitism. “As an African American United States citizen, I refuse to be ambiguous or approach this commitment to stand against violence and hatred directed toward Jewish people as somehow a binary choice or a denial of suffering of some over others ..."

Churchgoers, college help refugee student

Nikita Samsonenko’s road to America from war-torn Ukraine has been eased by United Methodists, including a Prague women’s center; churches in Michigan and United Methodist-related Adrian College. Samsonenko is now a student at Adrian College.
