Black caucus finds hope in work ahead
LOS ANGELES (UM News) — During the 58th annual gathering of Black Methodists for Church Renewal, members were called to fight for justice and challenge systems of inequality. Chairperson Deborah Bass called for “perseverance, purpose and justice, as we look to our future as a caucus active in the church and in our communities.” John W. Coleman reports. |

Bishop Justo remembered as ‘pillar of faith’
CABANATUAN CITY, Philippines (UM News) — Retired Bishop Benjamin A. Justo of the Philippines Central Conference is being remembered for his humility, integrity, humor and grace. “To me, he was more than an episcopal leader; he was a shepherd, mentor and pillar of faith,” said Bishop Rodel M. Acdal of the Baguio Area. Justo died March 28 at age 84. Gladys P. Mangiduyos has an obituary. |

Church celebrates UMCOR’s ministry
CROFTON, Md. — Members and guests at Community United Methodist Church heard about the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s ministry of “love in action” on UMCOR Sunday. Jim Cox, UMCOR’s executive director, was among the guest speakers on March 30. He said the relief agency “is needed now, more than ever.” After worship, the congregation assembled and packed 100 cleaning and hygiene kits. The Rev. Erik Alsgaard reports.

KATY, Texas — Holy Covenant United Methodist Church has found success with a confirmation class structure that combines standard in-person instruction with independent learning, family discussions and communal experiences. “We decided to change the format to try and meet the very busy lives of our students,” said the Rev. VBS-like program brings kids together
MANILA, Philippines — Children in the community of P. Padres, Sampaloc, are learning Bible stories, creating artwork and singing songs as part of a Saturday program similar to vacation Bible school. Prayer vigil set ahead of court hearing
WASHINGTON — An interfaith prayer vigil is scheduled on the eve of the first hearing in a lawsuit filed by 27 Christian and Jewish groups, including United Methodists, against the Department of Homeland Security’s policy that allows immigration enforcement within houses of worship. The vigil is set for 6:30 p.m. U.S. Eastern time April 3 at National City Christian Church in Washington. The hearing is set for April 4.
