Church helps those displaced by violence
FIZI, Congo (UM News) — Continued clashes between government forces and Mai-Mai armed groups have forced residents of Misisi villages to flee violence and seek refuge in Lweba. The United Methodist Church in Congo used a grant from United Methodist Discipleship Ministries to provide food relief to about 100 people. Jolie Shabani has the story.

Tennessee, Memphis conferences vote to combine

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee and Memphis Conferences have voted in favor of combining into a new, yet-to-be-named conference, Nashville Area Bishop William T. "Bill" McAlilly announced in his blog. The process still requires approval next summer by the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference.

Losing a presence with church closing

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The congregation of Berry Temple United Methodist Church was formed in 1887 as part of a now-defunct private institution for African American girls. Now, as its final service nears on June 30, the church's pastor sees the closure as another example where "communities of color are being pushed out to the margins." Thomas Calder reports.

California-Nevada Conference
11 churches march together in Pride parade

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Eleven area United Methodist churches marched together in Sacramento's Pride parade on June 9. What drove the churches' desire to participate was "clarifying that our denomination is not unified in supporting the Traditional Plan," said Doug Treadwell, who spearheaded the churches' effort. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Two advocacy groups, Uniting Methodists and Mainstream UMC, say they are backing a petition for reconsideration to the Judicial Council, the denomination's top court, regarding its April ruling upholding the Traditional Plan adopted at the special General Conference in February.
