Crossing language barriers for sanctuary

ATLANTA — After taking a Guatemalan woman into sanctuary last fall, the congregation at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Charlottesville, Virginia, submitted an application to the United Methodist Committee on Relief aimed at allowing their Spanish-speaking guest and supporters to fully participate in worship. The grant from the denomination’s Global Migration fund provides for translation equipment and the ability to hire experienced translators through 2019. Christie House has the story.

KANSAS CITY — More than 3,000 United Methodist youth have gathered for Youth 2019, being held July 10-14. Under the theme “Love Well,” the young people are considering how to take the message of Jesus seriously and take action in loving ways. Worship and Bible study are being shown online.

Colorado deacons start new ministry model 

CHICAGO — Through Sacred Stones Ministries, three female deacons offer their skills to United Methodist congregations that lack the resources to hire a full-time pastor or any staff beyond a solo pastor. Each deacon serves multiple communities in a part-time or contract capacity, offering workshops, worship materials or mission opportunities. Eric Smith reports.

Clinton, Lowery to be honored at SCLC convention

ATLANTA — Hillary Rodham Clinton, former secretary of state, Democratic presidential nominee and a United Methodist, will be honored with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Realizing the Dream Award. The Rev. Joseph Lowery, a United Methodist pastor and the longest-serving former president of the SCLC, will also be honored at the July 18-20 convention. The organization traces its roots to the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Ernie Suggs reports.

Methodists, Anglicans draw closer

LONDON — A recent vote by the Church of England’s Synod backs further steps towards bringing the Anglicans and Methodists into communion with each other through the interchangeability of ministers. The faith and order bodies of both denominations will now work on drafting a series of texts, including a formal declaration of a new relationship of communion between the two churches.

Rio Texas Conference 
Serving at a border respite center

McALLEN, Texas – The Rev. Robert Lopez, district superintendent in the Rio Texas Conference, recently served for a week with a volunteer team at a respite center in this Texas border city. He helped make sandwiches and soup for a seemingly unending line of immigrant refugees. “I believe this is sacred work,” Lopez writes in a reflection on his experience.
