Church giving overcomes worst fears

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UM News) — The aftermath of the contentious special General Conference saw a plunge in giving to denomination-wide ministries. By the end of 2019, apportionment collection rates had exceeded the most dire projections. Heather Hahn reports.

Scott-Joiner remembered

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Rev. Lisa M. Scott-Joiner has died in St. Louis at 57. The board member of the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry will be missed and leaves behind “a deep legacy of service to the church,” said Bishop William McAlilly, board president and leader of the Nashville Episcopal Area.

Claremont extends president’s contract

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Claremont School of Theology’s trustees have voted unanimously to extend the Rev. Kah-Jin Jeffrey Kuan’s contract as president. Kuan has helped the United Methodist seminary stabilize financially and is overseeing its move to United Methodist-affiliated Willamette University in Salem, Oregon.

Los Angeles pastor to preach on ‘Day 1’

ATLANTA — The Rev. Mandy Sloan McDow of Los Angeles First United Methodist Church is the featured preacher for March 8 and 15 on “Day 1,” the ecumenical radio program hosted by Peter Wallace. “I Drank My Fill on the Rock” and “One Thing I Do Know” will be the sermon topics. The program, also accessible at Day1.org and by podcast, is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media in Atlanta.

Reflecting on John Wesley’s time in Georgia

FORT PULASKI, Ga. — On Feb. 6, 1736, after sailing four months to get from England to America, John Wesley, Charles Wesley, Gen. James Oglethorpe and others landed on Cockspur Island off the coast of Savannah in what is now Georgia. A monument marks the location. Bishop Lawson Bryan reflects on Wesley’s ministry in Georgia and back in England.
